Karen van Creveld Lighting Design is an independent lighting design practice committed to providing highly creative, innovative and sustainable lighting solutions for a wide variety of architectural projects, both large and small.
Our design approach is thorough and professional. We work closely with our client and design team to establish an appropriate and achievable brief for every project and offer specific design services, tailored to meet individual project needs. These range from advising on discreet and thoughtfully detailed lighting treatments for individual rooms to designing full lighting schemes for larger installations.
We have extensive experience in lighting both interior and exterior spaces, having worked on many different types of projects from contemporary residential to restaurants, exhibition spaces, landscape gardens and historic monuments. Our clients include private individuals, architects, interior designers and commercial companies.

Karen van Creveld M.Sc (Arch), BA Hons, PLDA, MSLL
Karen is an independent lighting designer with more than 17 years experience. She was born in South Africa and began her career as a Sculptor (BA Honours, Fine Arts & History of Art, University of Witwatersrand) before immigrating to the UK and specialising in Architectural Lighting Design, achieving her M.Sc. with Distinction in Lighting from the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London.
Throughout her career Karen has been responsible for a diverse range of interior and exterior architectural lighting design projects, including cathedrals, historic institutions, leisure and public amenity facilities, urban redevelopment schemes, restaurants, exhibitions and luxury residences.
Before establishing her own lighting design studio, Karen worked as a senior designer with consultants Lighting Design Partnership (LDP) for many years. Prior to this she was a partner in the interior design practice, AK Design.
Karen received the Lightmonger of the Year Award (1998) for achieving an M.Sc. with Distinction and her academic research was published in the International Journal of Lighting Research and Technology (2000). She has contributed to specialist lighting publications and presented a number of papers at national and international lighting conferences - and has twice judged the prestigious UK Lighting Awards (2004 and 2008) and the Lux Awards 2011. She also works as a visiting lecturer on lighting design at the Inchbald School of Interior Design. She is a member of the Professional Association of Lighting Designers (PLDA) and an elected Council member of the Society of Light and Lighting (MSLL).
